Kurt Cobain Might Have Been Victim of Homicide

(MENAFN) A fresh forensic review has concluded that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain may have been the victim of homicide rather than suicide, according to reports citing a newly conducted private investigation.

Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27. The original police investigation determined that he died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head, officially classifying the case as a suicide.

The new homicide claim stems from a reassessment of autopsy records and crime scene evidence by a group of independent forensic specialists. The effort was organized and funded by Nirvana fan Michelle Wilkins, who leads a research initiative called “Who Killed Kurt?”

According to the findings, Cobain—who had a documented history of drug addiction—may have been rendered unconscious by a heroin overdose prior to being shot, with the scene allegedly manipulated afterward. Wilkins pointed to autopsy observations indicating brain and liver necrosis, which she argued aligns with oxygen deprivation caused by overdose.

“The necrosis of the brain and liver happens in an overdose,” Wilkins said. “It doesn’t happen in a shotgun death.”

The investigative team also questioned elements of the physical evidence. They noted that Cobain’s left hand, reportedly positioned around the shotgun barrel, showed no blood traces. Additionally, blood staining along the hem of his shirt was interpreted as possibly indicating that the body had been moved. The group further argued that the weapon would not have ejected a shell if his hand had been placed on the forward barrel as described, yet a spent casing was discovered in a location inconsistent with the expected trajectory.

An alleged eyewitness account was also referenced, claiming Cobain was seen “being manhandled by three men into the greenhouse” roughly 30 minutes before a gunshot was heard.

Based on these conclusions, the group has urged Seattle authorities to revise the official cause of death to “undetermined” and reopen the investigation.

Skepticism surrounding the suicide determination emerged shortly after Cobain’s death. Critics have long argued that he would have been physically incapable of administering a fatal dose of heroin and subsequently firing a shotgun.

Cobain was survived by his wife, musician Courtney Love, and their daughter Frances Bean, who was 20 months old at the time. Because he left no will, his estate was inherited entirely by Love and their child. At the time of his death, the estate was estimated at approximately $50 million in assets, including songwriting royalties and publishing rights—equivalent to roughly $109 million today.
