US Case Targets Youth Addiction by Social Media

(MENAFN) Opening statements are scheduled to start Monday in a United States courtroom as a lawsuit accuses major social media firms of intentionally crafting platforms that foster addiction among minors.

High-profile figures, including Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and YouTube head Neal Mohan, are among the technology leaders anticipated to appear as witnesses, according to local coverage.

Originally slated for late January, the proceedings were postponed after a defense attorney fell ill. The case will be heard by a panel of six female and six male jurors, and the hearings could extend into March, as reported by a media outlet.

Adam Mosseri, who leads Instagram—the image and video platform operated by Meta—is expected to testify during the opening week. Zuckerberg is set to follow, with his appearance in a Los Angeles court possibly occurring as soon as next week, the media outlet noted.

The civil lawsuit was filed by the Social Media Victims Law Center, based in Seattle, on behalf of a 20-year-old woman from California. She alleges that more than ten years of compulsive social media use contributed to anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia, the report said.

Attorneys representing Meta are expected to dispute any direct link between social networking services and adolescent mental health problems, while emphasizing the platforms’ beneficial effects. These arguments were outlined by members of the company’s legal team cited by the media outlet.

In a blog entry published in January, Meta stated that placing sole responsibility on social media companies for youth mental health challenges "oversimplifies a serious issue," arguing that the allegations made in the lawsuit do not accurately reflect reality.
