Spooky Season in Seattle

Seattle feels different, the air is a little crisper, the sun sets earlier, and the leaves are changing color. As one of the Special Events Office’s permit specialists, I’m also transitioning from the high volume of exciting summer events to a steadier rhythm of fall festivities. While I’ll miss the summer sun and its Paddle Raves and Pride Parades, I’m looking forward to welcoming fall with a host of spooky season activities.

Here are a few of the events I’m looking forward to the most!

I’m excited to honor the traditions of Día de Muertos en Pike Place Market. This event is part of The Night Shift, a free monthly evening series celebrating local art, music, food, and creativity. The Market is closing out its inaugural Night Shift series with mariachi and folklórico performances, community altars, lucha libre, and a Día de Muertos parade on Oct. 23, 12 – 9 p.m.

West Seattle continues the fall festivities with Harvest Fest on Oct. 25, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The annual event features a costume parade, trick or treating, pie eating contests, and loads of kids’ activities. To quote the organizer, Stacie from Wall Street Junction, “All ghosts and goblins welcome for a safe, freaky good time!”

Trolloween is Fremont’s long-standing tradition of celebrating the birthday of the Fremont Troll and honoring the neighborhood’s artist community on Halloween, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. Some highlights of the festival are the parade, watching the giant puppets, listening to the beats of Brazilian drum group VamoLá, and appreciating the wide array of skeletal, goblin, and ghoul costumes.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of the events our office is working to permit this fall. For a complete calendar of permitted events like the Pumpkin Spice Run through the leaves of scenic Seward Park or haunted houses, head on over to our website and click View Special Events Calendar. Maybe you’ll discover your next favorite community event!

Curious about permitting your own event? We’re also hosting a Fall Open House on Oct. 22, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., at City Hall. You’re invited to drop in to ask our office and the Special Events Committee questions (RSVP here).
